Baby Boy is Here!
Some of you may have seen the announcement on Facebook late last week, but just to make it official…
Our newest son was born at home on Wednesday, February 15th at 9:07pm!
A birth story with more details is coming, but to satisfy at least a little bit of curiosity in the meantime, he weighed 7 lbs 7 oz and was just over 20 inches long. He was supposed to be born in the water, but it didn’t exactly work out that way, but not for reasons you might think. There’s a funny story behind it and let’s just say that the birth wasn’t the only excitement going on in our home that night!
His name is Kepler Matthias. If you look up Kepler, you might find the meaning “hat maker”, but that’s not why we chose it. 🙂
We named him after Johannes Kepler, who was a Creationist, Astronomer, Physicist and more from the 16/17th century. Several years ago, we were at a homeschool convention listening to a seminar on teaching math, and the speaker was talking about how when Kepler worked on his intricate mathematic and physics calculations, he would sometimes become so filled with worship as he contemplated the wonders of how God had created the world with such perfect and precise order that he would burst into spontaneous praise, and then go back to finishing his calculations. I asked my husband to explain why he wanted to choose the name and this is (loosely) what he said,
“Johannes Kepler was a man who didn’t see the spiritual and physical world as separate. I love that he saw those elements as being unified. He saw God in science and math and all Creation… he saw His fingerprints in the invisible patterns of the universe and it stirred worship in his heart. I want our son Kepler to live a life that sees God’s work in all aspects of his life.”
And Matthias means “gift of God”, which of course, this sweet new baby most certainly is.
Congratulations! I am due end of March with our ninth baby and Lord willing will be born at home as was four other of our children. I love home birth and pray that this one goes well too. I am happy for you.
He is such a handsome little guy! What an awesome story behind picking the name! I love it when people make connections with names like that. Congratulations on the birth of Kepler!

Love the use of the name Kepler. One of the best books I read this year was Kepler’s Witch – which explore in detailed Kepler’s faith. Wonderful namesake for your little one!

I’m due in 11 days, we’re hoping for a homebirth too, but it depends if I go overdue or not, since the midwife has to leave 3 days after my due date (there is only one midwife here, but there used to be none)/ I have a labour tub all ready to go so I hope to use that too. Anyways, I have hopes and dreams for this birth but God is in control.
How fun that you have 2 girls and 2 boys now. Caden must be excited. My oldest wants a boy “since I already have a sister” but the youngest really wants a girl only. So it should be interesting!

I asked my oldest 2 (15 & 18 years old) if they had heard of Johannes Kepler and they had, I was surprised as I hadn’t heard of him until I read your post. I asked where they had heard of Kepler, they replied “Jonathon Park” (a Saturday morning radio program) We have 6 children and home school.

We also had a baby girl named Heidi Renee. She was born Feb. 15, at 4:18pm, in a waterbirth pool at home. I would send a picture, but I am not sure how to.

Congratulations! We named our son Kepler as well. He was born in June of 2006. We didn’t name him Kepler for the same reason that you did, but my husband did do some research on Johannes Kepler before we decided on that name. After Kepler was born, we did a search to see if there were any other boys named Kepler and at the time there wasn’t. So, every once in a while, we will do a search to see if anyone else has chosen the name. It seems that we share some of the same beliefs, and we also loved the fact that Johannes was a believer as well as an astronomer.
Congratulations on the birth of Kepler. We chose the name Kepler too for son, born in 2007, and again for similar reasons as yours. Enjoy.
