Does this book differ a lot from your “Plan It, Don’t Panic” book”? I am interested in planning healthy meals on a budget and have just purchased the above book, but am wondering if I need to buy this one too….

I’m not sure if this is the correct place to leave a comment about this, but I ordered this book in paperback and I have yet to receive it. This has been months ago. If you could please email me, that would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Is the digital version of the book readable on a regular computer? Or do I need a Kindle (or similar reader) for it? I don’t have a Kindle or Kindle-like product, so I can only use my laptop. Otherwise, I’ll need the paperback.

@Terri, It’s readable on a regular computer. It’s in a .PDF file, which every computer can read.

I just went to order the ebook but the sale price of $9.49 would not work with the coupon. Do you know why? I was hoping to read it today! :)

@Heather Tully, The sale has just ended and I haven’t changed the page yet (I’m waiting for nap time this afternoon- the life of a mommy blogger!). But, just because you asked, if you email me through my contact page, I’ll get you a book for the sale price, ok? :)

I live in Hawaii and do not have the benefit of food co-ops or free/inexpensive ground shipping from whole food suppliers on the mainland. Believe it or not, even gardening is a challenge here.
There are “open markets” with a limited variety of fresh vegetables, though the pricing is not much better than the grocery stores. There are three different whole foods/health food stores here (one being Whole Foods Market) with all of them about the same as far as pricing (higher than the regular grocery stores). Our Walmart and Target do not have the large grocery depts like the mainland stores have.
Would this book be helpful for cost-cutting in my situation?

I am the Acquisitions Librarian at Robbins Library, a public library in the town of Arlington, Massachusetts. One of our patrons has asked us to order “Real food on a real budget” but we have not been able to find it at any of our usual suppliers, Ingram, Baker & Taylor or Amazon. We are not in a position to order online using a credit card, rather we need to be invoiced. Could this work so that we can get the book from you directly?

Hi Stephanie, One question, is this book full of suggesting involving wheat? I need to minimize/eliminate wheat from our lives. If I could get our groceries in 1/2, I wouldn’t need to work! I already cook from scratch and try to be wise, but we are still scrapping by.

@Kelly Minard, Nope, not at all. We actually don’t eat wheat as a family. We substitute either wheat alternatives (like spelt and kamut), use other flours like rye and barley, as well as gluten-free options like quinoa, millet, brown rice, etc.

The book is really not about any one particular style of eating, other than healthier, whole foods. I did it that way on purpose so that it would be applicable to anyone, no matter what sort of a special diet they had, whether they liked to eat lots of pastured meat and raw dairy, or they were strict vegetarians or raw foodies.

The point is that it focuses more on techniques, rather than specific menus or recipes. I think you’ll find it has something to offer anyone! :)

@Virginia Moore, You mean, will the techniques work? Absolutely! They’re not just for families. This book was meant to work for any size family, living any place. :)

I see 2 prices on the paperback one.. Which one is the price?

    Reply

Stephanie @ Keeper of the Home July 28, 2010 at 8:11 am

@blair, It’s complicated to explain, but the prices on the two different pages depend on whether you’re coming as a referral from another site, or whether you found the book directly on our site.

Ultimately, the prices are the same- they both total about $26 with shipping, but one has a higher price with free shipping, and one has a lower price plus a shipping charge. We just had to do it that way because of the systems that we use for tracking and making the book sales. Sorry for the confusion! :)
