Everytime I read it, I giggle just a little,

"Thanks for using Eco Nuts- you'd be nuts to use anything else!"

Truth be told, I'm nutty in so many other ways that perhaps the fact that I'm now using dried fruit shells (aka soap nuts) to clean my clothes shouldn't surprise me or anyone else!

Why would you want to choose Eco Nuts soap nuts to clean your clothes?

• They are completely sustainable, renewable, biodegradable and an organic alternative to chemical detergents and more expensive natural laundry detergents
• They are gentle and chemical or allergen free. No concerns for sensitive baby skin, or those with eczema or other skin conditions.
• They are mild and don't leave residue, so they are suitable for washing cloth diapers.
• They have antimicrobial properties, which makes them a great choice for those with septic or grey water systems.

Wondering how soap nuts actually work? They contain saponin, which is a natural cleaner that breaks the surface tension of the water to penetrate the fibers of your clothing- a fancy way to say that they are able to life stains and leave the dirt in the water to be washed away. They don't foam up, because they don't contain foaming agents. This was disconcerting to me at first, but I decided to get over it and see whether they worked anyways!

I received my trial of soap nuts from The Baby Bum Store, who recently began carrying Eco Nuts for all their cloth diapering customers in particular. I tried them out this past week and they've actually been worked pretty hard in a short amount of time.

I've used them in both cold and hot, regular loads, heavy blankets, and cloth diapers, all successfully. The real test happened today, with an incredibly yucky load of diapers which contained some toddler explosions. I double rinsed before I washed (even though I usually rinse only once), but was shocked and pleased to see that the diapers came out fresh smelling and clean, even though this was already the 5th wash my soap nuts had been through (and they are generally able to be reused for 5-7 washes).

Final score? Indescribably poopy diapers 0, Eco Nuts 1.

Will soap nuts begin to replace my trusty natural detergents? The jury is still out on that one. I love how small and light they are to carry and store, and the fact that they're entirely sustainable and that I can toss them in my compost. I was impressed with their cleaning ability, despite the lack of bubbles and pretty smells. You just might win me over, little soap nuts.

Since returning from Blissdom, my head continues to absolutely swirl with thoughts and ideas. A couple of really good things that came out of the conference for me were a truly renewed desire to be a better blogger who serves the loyal and incredible community that exists here at Keeper of the Home. The second is the recognition that to do that, while continuing to keep my family my absolute #1 priority, is that I need some help to do it.

I am currently looking for contributing writers for Keeper of the Home. I will be cutting my own posting schedule down to 4 days a week, and have decided to open my blog up for some amazing ladies to contribute on a wide variety of topics that this blog usually touches on. Not only will this allow me to continue to run my site well and focus my available time on what I love doing, but it will add some other valuable perspectives, experiences and knowledge to the writing that I already do myself.

What's in it for you? Writing for another site is an excellent way to expose yourself to a new audience, increase your traffic and develop stronger working relationships with other bloggers!

So what am I looking for in a contributing writer?

The commitment can range anywhere from once a month, up to once every 3 months. I will also take contributions from one-time only guest posters. Topics I'm most interested in include:

• Real/Traditional/Nourishing foods (nutrition topics, as well as recipes)
• Kitchen tips and techniques (related to real food)
• Simplicity and sustainable living topics
• Frugality (mostly as it relates to real food and simple/sustainable living)
• Home remedies, herbs, homeopathics
• Gardening and raising your own food (ie. backyard chickens)
• Infant and child care (with a focus on natural mothering and products)
• Homemaking and home management (from a more natural perspective)
• Good stewardship/Natural living from a Christian perspective
• Food preserving (canning, dehydrating, root cellars)

If you have topics in mind that don't quite fit in, just ask me and I'll let you know what I think. I am in the process of creating an editorial calendar which will include a couple of specific topics for each month over the course of the next year, so I will slot in writers/topics according to my calendar and this will give writers some direction in knowing what to write about as well.

Believe me, if you're looking for someone's routines and schedules to emulate, mine probably aren't the right ones! Organizing is something I strive for, but not necessarily something I always achieve. And please always remember that when I share things like this, this is just me. Just my family, our season of life, our preferences, etc. It shouldn't tell you the "right" way to organize your own home or time, because there is no right way. Just seek the Lord and do your best to figure out how you can serve your family best!

What exactly is a Meal ePlanner you ask? It's sort of like having a ListPlanIt membership, but with a focus on just one area... meals planning and kitchen organization. It functions similarly to an eBook, in that you download it and can print off any or all parts of it as you wish.

It includes a brief intro to how to you it and some of the particular pages within. Then it gives you 17 different pages to assist you in making your meal planning come together easier. Lists like the 21 meals shown above, both monthly and weekly meal planners, grocery shopping lists, meal inventories, recipe card pages, and even a measurement equivalents page (no more running to the computer to pull up a measurement conversion website!).

Though I really prefer having the full membership to be able to access all of the lists available, having an ePlanner gives you a taste of what there is and enough specific lists to help you get organized in a particular area, without the cost of the year long membership, since ePlanners cost a mere $4.95. They're available for each category included in a ListPlanIt membership, allowing you to just purchase a few that interest you most (although if you're going to buy several, you might want to consider just purchasing a membership to give yourself full access to everything).

This month I had the extreme pleasure of reviewing the book Steady Days: A Journey Toward Intentional, Professional Motherhood, by Jamie C. Martin. The quote above is from the beginning of the book, setting the stage for an exploration of what it takes to be a professional mother.

There is one message that rings out strong and clear throughout the entirety of Steady Days and it is this... mothering requires intentionality. To maintain peace and order, we must be purposeful about how we achieve that. To maintain our enthusiasm, we must plan activities and encouragement into our days that inspire us. To capture memories and special moments with our children, we must have a plan for what we will do and how we will remember what we've enjoyed and experienced.

Over and over again, this one thought. To be successful in achieving my goals as a mother, I must be intentional. Purposeful. Prepared. Well-planned. Goal-oriented.

Let's face it. It can be easy to go on auto-pilot as a mom. Sometimes our days are so full and overwhelming that we just go with the flow, without being intentional about how we are spending these precious years with our children.

As a home educating mother, I make more of an effort to be intentional about how I educate my children, what learning resources I expose them to, how many books we read, etc.  And yet, throughout the rest of my day I can sometimes get so focused on other aspects of my roles as mother, wife, homemaker and more that I cease to be purposeful about all the other realms of my mothering.

If you can relate to what I'm saying, I think that you would be blessed by Steady Days. Jamie is encouraging and upbeat, and yet consistently challenging us to consider how we are doing things, what our motivations are, what could be changed, how we could grow as mothers.

A few other practical things I loved:

• Short, simple chapters. If bite-sized is what you need to make it through a book and really implement its strategies, then you will just love how Jamie has organized Steady Days into 40 short chapters.
• Steady Days Planner. This is Jamie's version of a homemaking binder, and she has so many wonderful suggestions for adding to it. A few that I was particularly inspired by were a Steady Blessings page (for recording our blessings, special moments, thoughts of gratefulness), Special Date Organizer, Shopping Lists, and Children's Goals. Many of the particular pages she discusses and shows throughout the book can actually be found on her website, at http://www.steadydays.com/resources.html.
• Room Time. A clever technique for achieving a bit of quiet time for Mom to get some things done, while each child plays/reads productively in their own space (no more sibling squabbles, at least for 20-30 minutes!). Love it!

Final thoughts: I really enjoyed this book and I know that I will reference it again and again. I love Jamie's encouragement to just implement new things or small changes bit by bit. For moms who are feeling overwhelmed and in need of someone to help you get more organized and intentional in your mothering, Steady Days is for you!
