Meal planning is definitely a wonderful way to save on your household expenses. It allows you to make less trips to the grocery store because you already have planned for a week or two, therefore there's less temptation too to buy items you don't really need. It helps you serve meals that are healthy and since you've planned for it in a weekly manner, your family members won't get stuck eating the same dishes every few days.

Really good post! I love your two-week rotation idea. It's a great way to make sure nothing goes to waste, plus you get all those extra savings too!

Hey Sarah,
If you live in the same part town as Steph, THE best fruit and veggie stand is Two EE's in Fleetwood. During the summer they grow most of their own produce and it is all unsprayed. If you live on the other side of town, then I have always found good prices with Ralph's out in Murrayville. I am not sure about spraying practices, it has been a couple of years since I lived out that way.

oh, with the 2 week rotation, what do you do about things that have to be bought that week, like milk? Or is it that you get that from your share, so you don't factor that in? What about produce, which might not have the same nutrition value the longer it sits in the fridge? What do you do if the "off" week happens to have some great deals? (I find the flyers fairly useless but read them anyways as sometimes there are good deals on healthy things but its usually rare).

I do much like you, except that I love the idea of having my husband rate his favourites. I also need to update my list, as I do have one, of all our meals, but I made it the first year we were married, and well, things have changed A LOT in 5 years! LOL. #5 I also don't do. Also I love the idea of planning a specific idea for each day #4. I do this sort of, but not so organized as that. :)

Anyways I actually am heading off to do my groceries right now since I just read the Friday flyers, planned my menu, and made my list! :)

One thing I heard from someone and think is great is to limit yourself to three "splurge" items (things that aren't on your list) when you grocery shop. This way you don't get 10 things you don't need, but you're not depriving yourself either. Crackers not on your list? That's ok, you are allowed 3 splurge items. Find 4 or 5 things you want? Prioritize. What can wait? What don't you need?
This allows you to buy things that aren't on your list without breaking your budget! :)

if you don't mind saying, which fruit and vegetable market do you use? i read in your book that you go to a co-op, but i have not been able to find something like that here in town (we live in the same place.) :)
