Great review. I just checked the site again. It is interesting how their current selection really is focused on in season and local. It's a powerful reminder. Can't wait for the special offer.
The mention of your blog on the Home page is very nice. :)

I pulled up behind a spud truck the other day and thought of your blog. Great review. It took me a while to figure out the right amount of milk and how much I need to take out to keep getting good kefir once they start to multiply.

I bought kefir grains from kefirlady and they have worked well for me. I don't have access to Spud in Ontario but I do have access to the GFB. I tried emailing them a couple times for info and finally got it yesterday. A woman in my neighbourhood co-ordinates the food so I don't need to start up my own. I'll be picking up my organic box next week!
Below are the different boxes they offer. If you click on the link, they have a sample of the kinds of foods that were sent out in November.
http://www.foodshare.net/goodfoodbox05.htm
Good Food Box - $17
Family-sized selection of affordable fresh fruit and vegetables, with an emphasis on seasonal produce and one or two "interesting" items each delivery.
Small Good Food Box - $12
A smaller version of the Good Food Box for singles, seniors or small families.
Fruit Box - $12
Just fruit, with an emphasis on what's at its best and in season at the moment.
Large Organic Box - $32
Certified organic produce, mostly local. Very seasonal, lots of root vegetables in the winter. The higher price of this box reflects the higher production costs that come from producing food organically.
Small Organic Box - $22
Smaller version with the same certified organic produce, mostly local, very seasonal.
Wellness Box - $12
A week's worth of servings of fruits and vegetables cut-up and measured for you with love and care. Suitable for seniors and students.
Here is a link to the various locations in Canada that participate in this amazing program:

I will be patient & wait for your special offer! But I'm so excited!
Here's a laugh! They don't deliver all the way to us (being in Ventura County has it's drawbacks!) but we have another mutual friend who has graciously agreed to let us 'use' her address for the deliveries (then we just have to stop by her house (a little out of the way) or bride her to bring it to us...Anyhoo, we're going to see how it goes!
My intent in using spud is to keep my actual in-store grocery shopping time to an even barer minimum than it is now & to maintain a set grocery budget while getting great, fresh organic produce.

I am SO stoked about this! It helps to watch your grocery total go up with each purchase, doesn't it? Keeps you on your toes!
Mab, just wait for the deal- it'll be up early next week! And yes, I'll tell you how I like the avocados.
Charmayne, so many great questions. That's a great idea, to post about how I stretch my budget, buying Canadian. I'd be happy to share and will add that to my list of upcoming posts.
As for the milk, you're doing the right thing to buy non-homogenized, even though it's pasteurized. It's a step in the right direction! I would definitely culture it (ie. yogurt or kefir) to add the good bacteria and enzymes back in. I think it's just fine to use the yogurt and kefir, high quality cheese, etc. in place of raw milk when you can't access it.
And kefir grains... you know, I keep wanting to start selling some from my blog, but they're just not multiplying fast enough to really be able to do that. :( I do know that you can get them here:

Sorry, I don't know any Canadians sites, but they'll be able to ship it to you anyways.

Jen, I can see how ordering with spud! could help you save money because you can be so intentional about what you buy.
