M is for making mommy proud

We had a momentous moment in our family yesterday (gosh, all these m's, such alliteration).

My Abbie read her very first word:

In our learning times (the phrase we use for our "school" work), we've been casually working on letters sounds, using the methods from Ruth Beechick's A Home Start in Reading. We don't focus on the letter names, and there is no pressure whatsoever, just fun learning games using a handful of letter sounds.

She received this LeapFrog Word Whammer for Christmas from Grandma, and it has been a really fun way to complement what I am doing with her. She loves hearing the letter sound songs that it sings, and having it sound out and read the simple words that she creates.

Mop is the name of the dog in a story that we read yesterday during our learning time. I was following the words with my fingers, helping her to recognize the words that were repeated throughout the story. Hours later, after lunch, housework, etc. we were playing around on the Word Whammer, and I put in the letters M-O-P.

Before I could say anything, or press any buttons, she exclaimed, "Oh, it's Mop!".

Do all parents think that their children are incredible geniuses? I may be entirely biased, but I think she's the most beautiful little monkey of a genius I know.
