I'm glad she did because after reading your cash system and grocery list I've been blessed. As a divorced mother of 3 girls it's been a struggle over the years. Yet God's grace and provision has kept us. While, my girls are older now 18,17&14 and the eldest just started college this fall(2,000) miles from home my prayers are a bit different now.For example, yesterday I started looking at my income, expense and realized I need to change this quickly, since the middle girl goes to college next. So reading your blog on how your family manages your budget was a Godsend. Thank you so much for sharing and being so detailed. I could really see the process your family uses.

I happened upon your page after a friend recommended a few essential vitamins and oils for me and my family. Budgeting was a nightmare--never knew if we were going to make $40 or $200 on any given night. We followed your "worst case scenario" plan and made a budget based on the minimum we could hope to make over a month's time and put all the extra towards debt (once we were debt free it went to savings.)

My husband and I both worked in restaurants until he settled into a career with a set salary three years ago. We use cash for groceries and entertainment, check card for gas, and medical bills (for better record keeping) I agree that those envelops are way over priced. I use a small expandable file (like a coupon file)

We use a "hybrid" cash system. But then we had to use every last bit of it to move, and sales have been so bad that if we took out 10% we wouldn't be able to pay the rent. Hopefully the economy will start to turn around.

Before our big cross-country move earlier this year we saved 10% of every check, so we always had a nice buffer.
